An at-home sleep test you wear in your own bed

No wires, no sleep lab, no night away from home. You wear a small ring on your finger while you sleep, and Dr. Jeff Buxton reviews what it records with you. Why It Matters

What happens while you sleep is hard to see on your own

You might know you snore because someone told you. You might know you wake up tired no matter how early you go to bed. What you cannot see is what your breathing, oxygen, and sleep cycles are doing through the night.

That is where a sleep test helps. Real data from a normal night in your own bed gives Dr. Buxton a starting point, so the conversation about your airway is based on what is actually happening, instead of guesswork. That is why it is the standard first step for most adult patients at our Draper office.

  • Worn at home, on your normal schedule
  • A small ring, with no tangle of wires

Who It's For

Signs a sleep test may be a good next step

None of these signs tells you what is causing them. A sleep test is one way to start finding out.

1

Snoring

Loud or nightly snoring, or a partner who has moved to the guest room.

2

Waking up tired

A full night in bed, and you still wake up feeling like you never slept.

3

Pauses or gasping

Someone has noticed you stop breathing, choke, or gasp during sleep.

4

Daytime fog

Trouble focusing, afternoon crashes, or leaning hard on caffeine to get through the day.

5

Morning headaches or clenching

Waking with a headache, a tight jaw, or signs of grinding.

6

Struggling with CPAP

You have tried CPAP and want to understand your options, or you want updated data before exploring alternatives.

Your First Step

It all starts with an airway consultation

Before anyone talks treatment, we get the full picture. Your consultation with Dr. Buxton includes:

  • A 3D CBCT scan of the airway, jaws, and joints
  • A digital intraoral scan (no goopy molds)
  • Photos and a hands-on exam of breathing, tongue, and bite
  • A plain-language walkthrough of what we see and what your options are

What the Ring Measures

A clearer picture of your night

The ring we use is an FDA-cleared home sleep testing device. Worn overnight, it records signals from your finger and uses them to estimate what is happening during sleep, including:

  • Breathing interruptions (reported as an apnea hypopnea index, or AHI)
  • Blood oxygen levels and drops through the night
  • How stable or fragmented your sleep is
  • Time spent in lighter, deep, and REM sleep
  • Heart rhythm patterns during sleep

These readings are screening data. A diagnosis of sleep apnea requires appropriate testing and interpretation by qualified medical providers, and when a diagnosis is needed, we refer you to a sleep physician we work with, or you're welcome to see a physician of your choice.

Review with Dr. Buxton

Dr. Buxton walks through your results in plain language and explains what they may mean for your airway. When a diagnosis is needed, we refer you to a sleep physician we work with, or you can see a physician of your choice.

Plan your next step

If the data points toward an airway concern, the next step is usually an adult airway consultation with 3D CBCT imaging.

What Comes Next

Answers first, then a plan built around the root cause

A sleep test is a starting point. If your results suggest your airway is working hard at night, Dr. Buxton looks for why, starting with an adult airway consultation that includes a 3D CBCT airway scan, a digital intraoral scan, and a hands-on exam.

From there, adult care here often follows a clear sequence: expansion with DOMEzero or Vivos appliance therapy to create room, clear aligners to finish, and, for many snorers, QuietNite laser treatment of the soft palate. Options like sleep apnea treatment and CPAP alternatives are always discussed in coordination with your sleep testing and your medical providers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How does an at-home sleep test work?

You wear a small ring on your finger for a night of normal sleep at home. It records signals like oxygen levels and heart rhythm patterns, and its software uses them to estimate breathing interruptions and sleep stages. Dr. Buxton then reviews the results with you.

Can a home sleep test diagnose sleep apnea?

Home sleep testing is one of the tools used in the diagnostic process, but a diagnosis of sleep apnea requires appropriate testing and interpretation by qualified medical providers. When a diagnosis is needed, we refer you to a sleep physician we work with, or you can see a physician of your choice.

Is the ring comfortable to sleep in?

Most people find it easy to forget about. It is a small ring worn on one finger, with no wires, nasal tubes, or chest straps, and you sleep in your own bed.

Do kids need a sleep test?

Kids usually skip this step. For children, we typically start with a pediatric airway consultation. The at-home sleep test is designed as the first step for most adult patients.

What happens after my sleep test?

Dr. Buxton reviews your results with you. If they point toward an airway concern, the usual next step is an adult airway consultation with 3D CBCT imaging so we can look for the root cause and talk through options like DOMEzero expansion.
