Why It Matters

More room for your tongue, more room to breathe

Many adults who snore, wake up tired, or clench at night share one thing: a narrow, crowded arch. When the upper jaw is narrow, the tongue has less room to rest against the palate and may fall back toward the throat during sleep.

Vivos® appliance therapy is designed to support arch development and the airway using custom oral appliances you can take out. It's one of two expansion paths we offer adults at our Draper office, and it can be a good fit if you prefer a removable approach.

Who It Suits

Vivos may be a good fit if you

Dr. Buxton will confirm fit after your exam and 3D imaging.

1

Prefer a removable appliance

You'd rather wear something you can take out than have an appliance fixed in place.

2

Have a narrow or crowded arch

Your smile looks narrow, your teeth overlap, or your palate is high and tight.

3

Snore or sleep poorly

Your partner hears it, or you wake up unrefreshed even after a full night.

4

Struggle with CPAP

You've tried CPAP and want to explore a different approach alongside your sleep physician.

5

Clench, grind, or have jaw tension

Morning headaches, sore jaw muscles, or worn teeth are part of your story.

6

Want to avoid anchors in the palate

You'd like to explore options before considering bone-anchored expansion.

Your First Step

It all starts with an airway consultation

Before anyone talks treatment, we get the full picture. Your consultation with Dr. Buxton includes:

  • A 3D CBCT scan of the airway, jaws, and joints
  • A digital intraoral scan (no goopy molds)
  • Photos and a hands-on exam of breathing, tongue, and bite
  • A plain-language walkthrough of what we see and what your options are

How We Evaluate

We look at your airway before choosing an appliance

Every Vivos case starts with records. At your adult airway consultation, the team takes a 3D CBCT scan of your jaws and airway, a digital intraoral scan, and photos, and Dr. Buxton reviews the findings with you in plain language.

For most adults, the first step is an at-home sleep test, so your plan starts with real sleep data. If sleep apnea is suspected, we coordinate with appropriate providers, since sleep apnea is a medical diagnosis made with proper testing.

  • 3D CBCT imaging of the jaws and airway
  • Digital scans for a precise appliance fit
  • Sleep data to guide the plan

How It Works

Vivos treatment at our Draper office

Sleep test and consultation

A home sleep test for most adults, then 3D imaging and scans with Dr. Buxton.

Your custom appliance

Your Vivos® appliance is made from your digital scans and fitted in the office, where we show you how to wear and care for it.

Wear and adjust

You wear the appliance day and night on the schedule Dr. Buxton sets, with regular visits to check progress and make adjustments.

Align and finish

After expansion, many adults move into AIRTHO clear aligners, and QuietNite laser treatment for snoring can be added at any point.

Your Options

Vivos or DOMEzero? Two paths to a wider arch

Dr. Buxton offers two adult expansion paths, and the right one depends on your anatomy and your preferences.

Vivos® uses removable appliances worn day and night. It asks for steady wear habits, and it gives you the flexibility of taking the appliance out.

DOMEzero uses a fixed expander anchored to the palatal bone with small anchors, synchronized with clear aligners from day one. Which path fits best depends on your needs and your skeletal structure. You can read more about bone-anchored expansion on our MARPE page.

At your consultation, Dr. Buxton will show you your scans and explain which path he recommends, and why.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Vivos treatment?

Vivos® appliance therapy uses custom, removable oral appliances designed to support arch development and the airway in adults. It's worn day and night, and it's often part of a larger airway plan that may include clear aligners and myofunctional therapy.

Is Dr. Buxton a Vivos provider in Utah?

Yes. Dr. Jeff Buxton is a Vivos VIP Provider and treats Vivos patients at Toothpillow Breathing & Sleep Center in Draper, Utah.

How long do I wear the Vivos appliance each day?

It's worn day and night. Dr. Buxton sets your exact schedule at your fitting, and consistent wear matters for progress.

Is Vivos a CPAP alternative?

For some adults, an appliance-based approach may be part of a different plan than CPAP. Sleep apnea is a medical diagnosis, so we coordinate with your sleep physician and use sleep testing to guide decisions. Please don't stop CPAP without talking to your physician. See our CPAP alternatives page.

Should I choose Vivos or DOMEzero?

Both are designed to widen a narrow upper arch. Vivos is removable, and DOMEzero is a fixed, bone-anchored expander paired with clear aligners. Dr. Buxton recommends one after reviewing your 3D CBCT scan and hearing what matters to you.
